CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY
A smart home is a residence that uses internet-connected devices to enable the remote monitoring and management of appliances and systems.
A smart home integrates internet-connected devices for remote monitoring and control of appliances and systems, enhancing convenience and efficiency. Initially a concept in science fiction, the first actual smart home emerged in the early 2000s, spurred by advancements in technology and the affordability of automation systems. Early innovations, such as remote-controlled televisions patented in 1920, laid the groundwork for modern smart home development. Today, emphasis is placed on sustainability, energy efficiency, and security, with features like automated lighting, remote video surveillance, and intrusion alerts via smartphone applications. The future of smart homes is envisioned to resemble the digitized environments depicted in animated series, with seamless integration and automation of everyday tasks.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE RESEARCH PROBLEM
While automation has significantly advanced in industries, with automated assembly lines commonplace in automobile and bottling plants, its adoption in homes lags behind in some countries. Introducing automation into households could greatly ease everyday life. With the increasing familiarity and reliance on smartphones and tablets capable of performing tasks previously limited to PCs, there is an opportunity to develop a low-cost Embedded System. This system would leverage smartphones to automate entire homes, granting users remote access and control over all subsystems within the house.
1.3 AIM OF THE STUDY
The aim of the study is to design and implement a smart home that provides improve comfort, convenient and energy efficiency for its occupants.
